The Prince of Wales has added another string to his bow: taking bookings at an Indian restaurant. Prince William surprised a member of the public on Thursday when he picked up the phone and helped the caller book a table at Indian Streatery, an authentic, family run independent restaurant in Birmingham.

However, his lack of knowledge may have raised an eyebrow as he struggled to give them the name of the road.

The Prince and Princess of Wales laughed as he struggled to get the street name right, turning to the owner of the restaurant for help.

He booked the table for the unsuspecting customer and a guest after going back and forth about timings as they were travelling on a 3pm train.

In a recording of the phone call, the Prince can be heard saying: “When works for you? Half past two? You’ve got a train at three – well you can probably get in at half past two, that’s fine.”

William then asked what name the booking was under and finally settled the time, ending the call by saying: “We’ll see you at quarter past two, bye bye.”

After getting off the phone the staff laughed and applauded his skills, before he joked: “He knows where you are now, I probably sent him to somewhere else in Birmingham so I apologise.”

The Prince and Princess visited Birmingham to celebrate its diverse culture and to see first hand the creative industries that support young people from across the West Midlands.

Their visit to the Indian Streatery, based in the city centre, was a nod to the city’s rich Asian culture.

The restaurant is run by the Sharma family, led by head chef Meena, who came up with the original vision to bring real Indian street food to the city.

William and Kate met the Sharma family and staff at the venue to hear about the history of their restaurant and were introduced to former students from University College Birmingham who had trained there.

The couple’s second engagement was in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter at The Rectory, a local pub where they met young people working in the city’s creative industries, from music and film to jewellery design and gaming.
