The Princess of Wales weighed into a classic British debate as she revealed how she likes her tea during her royal away day to Leicester on Thursday.

Kate, 44, sat down for a hot drink at Bobby’s restaurant, named after the 1973 Bollywood film, while Prince William visited Cornwall for St Piran’s Day, 300 miles away. However, it seems the royal is not a fan of an overly sweetened brew, instead preferring to keep things simple.

The Princess was keen to sample some chai, and was asked: “Would you like sugar in your tea?” She responded, “no thank you”, and instead opted for just milk. After sipping the drink, which contains cinnamon, cardamom and other spices, she commented that it was “lovely”.

The Princess met Lakhani, 57, who runs the restaurant and his wife Enna, 56, enjoying traditional sweets together. She said: “What’s lovely about a family business is that the values still stay. That’s the heart of it. That’s really what matters to the customers, those relationships.”

Kate is known to be a fan of a brew and her preferences were revealed during a previous visit to the Kilcooley Women’s Centre. One royal fan asked after the visit how Kate “likes her tea”.

The charity responded on social media that she enjoys a builder’s tea: “Just like us little bit of milk…. so down to earth we were enchanted.” The Princess is often seen sipping cups of tea at engagements, when she speaks first-hand to volunteers and communities.

A joyful visit

The Princess of Wales celebrated the best of British-Indian culture during her visit to Leicester on Thursday, sampling chai and watching dancing.

The Princess looked stylish as ever in a cream jacket and matching coat, and was presented with a red flower garland necklace upon arrival.  She said: “Thank you so much for having me. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the work I’ve heard some fantastic things.”

She began her day by visiting a dance company called Aakash Odedra, before going to several family-run businesses on Leicester’s famous ‘Golden Mile’, home to jewellery, sari, and fashion boutiques.
