The annual diplomatic reception, hosted by the British royal family, is a highlight on the royal calendar, where members of the Royal Family meet with ambassadors and high commissioners from around the world. This year’s event, held at Buckingham Palace, saw many notable faces in attendance, but one notable absence raised eyebrows.

The Princess of Wales, who is typically a prominent presence at the annual Diplomatic Reception, was notably absent this year. On Tuesday, her husband, the Prince of Wales, attended the prestigious white-tie event at Buckingham Palace alone.

Kate, who is 42 years old, has attended the reception every year since her debut in 2013, except for one occasion in 2014 when it coincided with her and William’s trip to New York.

The palace gave no reason for her absence. However, we all know this past year has been challenging for the Wales family due to Kate’s cancer diagnosis, and she is slowly resuming her public engagements after finishing chemotherapy in September.

Princess Kate is reportedly focusing her efforts on the behind-the-scenes arrangements for her forthcoming Christmas carol service scheduled for December 6, which she will be hosting for the fourth consecutive year at Westminster Abbey.

Kensington Palace announced that during this year’s service, the Princess of Wales “wanted to celebrate the many people supporting those in need – individuals who have inspired, counselled, comforted, and above all else shown that love is the greatest gift we can receiveThis theme takes inspiration from the Christmas story which encourages us to consider the experiences of others and the important human need of giving and receiving empathy.”

A source told Vanity Fair: ‘It’s a really important occasion for Catherine and she is determined to be there, having been quite hands-on behind the scenes. Expect it to be a big family occasion and a happy note on which to close an otherwise very challenging 2024.’
